Syngenta India and ISAP firm up efforts on pink bollworm management in Punjab, Haryana & Rajasthan
New Delhi, June 11, 2022: In a concerted bid to protect cotton farmers from the menace of pink bollworm (PBW) in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, Syngenta India in association with Indian Society of Agribusiness Professionals (ISAP) is launching a special program for educating farmers on cotton crop management and providing material assistance to protect their cotton crops against the pest.
Titled Krishi Vikas program, this is part of Syngenta’s flagship CSR initiative I-SAFE (Inculcating Safety Awareness for Farmer Empowerment).
Noting the growing menace of the pink bollworm, Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goel had recently raised concerns and asked for adoption of right technology to prevent this menace. The Syngenta initiative under I-SAFE is also designed to supplement efforts by Central and States governments to curb this menace.
To run across 10 districts in these three states, the Krishi Vikas campaign will reach out to farmers and teach them on using technology to prevent PBW attacks. “We shall be providing 15,000 Pheromone traps and Pectino Lure to cotton farmers in above districts,” said Dr KC Ravi, Chief Sustainability Officer, Syngenta India. PBW attacks pose great risk to productivity of the cotton crops.
A pheromone trap is a type of insect trap that uses pheromones to lure insects. Pheromones are chemicals used by insects and other animals to communicate with each other. Insects send these chemical signals to help attract mates, warn others of predators, or find food.
“We have noted with concern the challenges posed by the pest to cotton growers, and this intervention is designed to provide early assistance to farmers to cope with this menace. For instance, farmers in Punjab’s cotton belt in Mansa district have been expressing concerns over pest attacks, and we are certain our efforts will adequately supplement the government's efforts” added Ravi.
Syngenta and ISAP shall also conduct 15 district level ceremonial programs with Agriculture department officials.
